The Process
A complete Jingdezhen porcelain workflow contains about 72 steps. These eleven representative stages explain how mineral-refined porcelain clay becomes a finished vessel.
Raw Material Stage
The body of porcelain is decided before the wheel ever turns.
Porcelain stone is selected, crushed, washed, and refined into dedicated porcelain clay. The quality of this prepared clay decides whiteness and firing stability.
The mined material is washed, screened, and purified to remove coarse sand, iron, and other impurities that would disturb the body or glaze.
The refined clay slurry is settled, dewatered, and aged. Time makes the body more even, more plastic, and easier to control by hand.
The clay is wedged by hand to expel air pockets, align texture, and build a body that can withstand shaping, trimming, and firing.
Forming Stage
This is where proportion, silhouette, and balance first appear.
On the wheel, the artisan raises the wall and opens the form by touch. Diameter, shoulder, lip, and foot are all decided in motion.
After partial drying, the body is trimmed and refined. This stage corrects proportion, sharpens the profile, and gives the vessel its final discipline.
Decoration Stage
Decoration is not surface ornament alone; it is where the vessel receives narrative, rhythm, and identity.
Blue-and-white brushwork is painted directly onto the body. The line has to be confident, because once it enters the kiln there is no second chance.
A clear glaze is applied over the painted surface. Thickness must stay even so the image remains lucid and the fired surface carries depth and light.
Firing and Completion
The kiln decides whether the work merely survives, or truly becomes porcelain.
The piece enters the kiln and faces its decisive test. Temperature rise, soaking, and atmosphere all shape the final body, glaze, and color response.
After cooling, the kiln is opened and the finished work is inspected. Form, ring, glaze, and painting are judged together before a piece is accepted.
The final work leaves the workshop and enters a space of display. At this point, craft becomes collection, and utility becomes culture.
